We are delighted that you have chosen to attend our Level 1 workshop on investments. To give you a "heads up" on the topics we plan to cover we begin the workshop by discussing why and how pension schemes invest.
In advance of the workshop it might be helpful if you had a think about:
- the reasons why pension shemes invest; and
- the extra issues they might need to consider when deciding to invest.
Once we have explored some of these basic principles, we will focus on:
- the range of investments pension schemes use;
- how to identify and compare regular and alternative investments;
- what to think about when make comparisons between investments; and
- how to select what is important when monitoring the performance of investments and investment managers.
After this workshop you will be able to:
- List at least 10 reasons why pension schemes invest.
- Name the investments most frequently used by pension funds, and using facts delivered during the course, explain the main characteristics and risks of these investments.
- Categorise the key varieties of investment management and investment strategies generally used by pension schemes.
- Use facts described during the course to explain how to make general comparisons between the main types of investment management and strategies used by pension schemes.
- List at least 10 factors which may influence investment performance in pension schemes.
